Children build it themselves<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A child is not a cup waiting to be filled. Give them good materials and a reason to care, and they construct their own understanding \u2014 testing it, knocking it over, putting it back together stronger. They are active participants in what they know, not an audience for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So our job is not to hand over the answer. It’s to set out something worth wondering about, then have the patience to stand back while they work it out. That patience is the method. Everything else is furniture.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Deciding<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Nobody hands out the plot. Children set the goal, cast the roles and choose what happens next. Deciding is a muscle, and this is where it gets used.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Making meaning<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

A new idea has to attach to something. Play gives a child somewhere to put it \u2014 a story, a game, a tower \u2014 so the concept already has a home when the lesson arrives.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Relating<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Play is crowded. Someone always wants the same block. Reading the room, changing tack, and repairing it afterwards all start here, not in a lecture about sharing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Steering<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The child choosing their own game is the child guiding their own behaviour. Self-discipline doesn’t get installed by an adult. It gets practised, quietly, all morning.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Underneath the noise<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Watch a child playing firefighter. They aren’t learning to fight fires. They’re negotiating who gets the hose, inventing a rule and then bending it, deciding what counts as a rescue, and working out what to do when someone refuses to cooperate. Most of the game happens before the game \u2014 in the planning, which they’ll happily spend longer on than the playing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That’s a child rehearsing how to think. Not a break from it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
